As the world reckoned with the Black Lives Matter movement and its calls for racial justice, a prestigious private school in a historically segregated city was attacked as racist on anonymous social media platforms. The allegations — many of them false — escalated and went viral across various social channels, threatening the school’s reputation and enrollment. Current students and families, alumni, and other stakeholders demanded the immediate dismantling of institutional racism and the implementation of anti-racist policies, curriculum and training. With the help of forensic tools, Rotenberg Associates was able to identify the sources of the misinformation, and developed strategies with the school’s Board of Directors and leadership team to combat misinformation and to craft new school policies and actions in order to advance anti-racist goals. Finally, we helped communicate to all stakeholders the school’s extensive actions to advance equity and inclusion within the school community.
